N-acetyl L-tyrosine may sound like a complicated ingredient, but we're here to break it down for you in today’s ingredient spotlight.

Scientifically speaking, N-acetyl L-tyrosine is the amino acid tyrosine with a few additions. A reaction occurs in which an acetyl group made of a carbonyl (a carbon combined with an oxygen) and a methyl (a carbon combined with three hydrogens) hops on board and joins tyrosine as a compound structure. The “L” in the name refers to the most chemically active form of the molecule ( 2020).

Simply speaking, N-acetyl L-tyrosine is a more absorbable form of the amino acid tyrosine.

The body needs amino acids to grow and repair muscle tissue and aid in regulatory cellular functions that make our bodies keep ticking. Tyrosine in particular is used as a building block for the following biochemicals:

  1. Dopamine, the neurotransmitter made from tyrosine and dopa that controls how we perceive pleasure and triggers us to focus and strive for more.
  1. Norepinephrine, a hormone and neurotransmitter that influences our mood, ability to concentrate, how awake we feel, and perceive stress by regulating blood pressure and blood sugar.
  1. Epinephrine (adrenalin), perhaps the most well known hormone that increases heart rate, strength, blood pressure, and metabolism in response to stimulating experiences like fear.
  1. Thyroid hormones, which control metabolism. When thyroid hormones are insufficient, the body experiences weight gain, fatigue, and a chronically slowed heart rate.

Tyrosine is one of the amino acids produced naturally by the body, but can be easily depleted in times of sickness and stress, including the stress brought on by intense workouts. It’s not too complicated… when tyrosine levels are low, so are the hormones we just discussed. When the hormone levels are low, you will experience fatigue and fogged focus.

This is why supplementation is necessary, and why ensuring you’re getting the most absorbable form is so important.
